Drachenhauhloch cave in Namibia: cameras sent to the largest underground lake in the world. It’s under the desert

Deep under the sands of the desert in Namibia is a flooded cave with the largest underground lake on the entire planet. Its exact size could not be determined for decades. The new expedition made an attempt to lower controlled robots into the reservoir, but on the video it turned out that the Drachenhauhloch cave still guards its secrets.

Divers were the first to explore the underground reservoir back in 1986. The descent was unsuccessful – the group only found out the colossal size of the cave. At the same time, the object was named Drachenhauhloch, “Dragon’s Breath”. The name was not chosen by chance: at certain periods of time, clubs of hot steam escape from the descent.

The cave is almost completely filled with water. The lake goes right under the Kalahari Desert, it turned out to be simply impossible to study it without equipment. But the robots managed to sink almost to the very bottom of the strange cave.

The underwater drone was equipped not only with cameras. It also has lasers and high-resolution sonar, which helped to delineate the approximate boundaries of the dungeon. It turned out that Drachenhauchloch has an elongated shape, ending in an extremely narrow segment at the very end.

The area of the lake is almost 3 hectares. The depth exceeds 200 meters, which makes it the deepest in the world. Researchers are also sure that golden cave catfish lives in the lake, which breathes air.

We lowered the camera as deep as we could. But Drachenhauhloch knows how to keep his secrets. The video shows narrow passages leading even deeper. There is a possibility that the cave is much larger, it may have exits to the surface, – said one of the research team.

The next attempt to explore the underwater cave will take place in 2024. A more advanced apparatus will be lowered down.
