Under the glaciers, the shape of Antarctica is not the same as on the maps. Scientists have shown the view of the continent without an ice sheet

The volume of the Antarctic ice sheet is about 26.5 million km³. This colossal amount of matter pushes the entire continent down. Actually, scientists believe that under the weight of the ice, the soil itself has already sunk to a depth of a kilometer. Based on this, the researchers compiled a special map and showed how Antarctica might look without an ice sheet.

The Antarctic ice sheet covers 98% of the entire continent. It contains 61% of the fresh water on the planet – the equivalent of 58 meters of sea level. If it ever melts, life on Earth will at least be completely different.

But Antarctica itself would look different without ice. Beneath the miles of ice cover is a very diverse landscape. The average height above sea level would drop to 82 meters. A line of Gamburtsev mountains would stretch across the eastern part of the mainland, the height of which reaches almost 3 kilometers. Today they are almost completely hidden.

Lake Vostok will also open, which will immediately become the largest in the world. Its area is about 16 thousand kilometers, but now there are four kilometers of ice to the water of the lake.

NASA specialists also made an assumption about the appearance of Antarctica without ice:

It is worth hoping that we will never see Antarctica without an ice cover.
