3300 hours: The man wanted to quit his job to take care of his son, but his colleagues came to the rescue

After the death of his wife, Andreas Graf, a German worker, took care of his leukemia-stricken son alone. The man would have had to quit his job to sit at the sick baby’s bedside, but his colleagues intervened.

Andreas Graf is a 36-year-old worker from Marburg. His wife died a few years ago, and in 2016 his son was diagnosed with terrible leukemia.

After treatment in the hospital, the boy needed constant care, so Andreas was already ready to write an application for discharge. But the head of human resources intervened to help the man.

At the meeting it was decided to split Andreas’ shifts among the other workers so that the man would not quit. All 650 employees agreed to work overtime, even those who did not know Andreas personally.

No one knew how long it would take the single father to care for his son. In total, the colleagues worked for Andreas for 3,264 hours, i.e. around 400 working days, which the man received as paid vacation. Andreas couldn’t hold back his tears.

In February 2018, Andreas came to work to thank everyone who had helped him. After the chemotherapy, Julius feels quite good and will soon be able to return to kindergarten and Andreas to his work. The man says he will be grateful to his colleagues for the rest of his life.
