A Stranger Removes His Shirt to Offer It to a Cold Homeless Man on a Subway – Captured on Camera.

While many kept their distance from a shivering homeless man in the subway due to his odor, a compassionate young man took a different approach. Joey Resto, a 23-year-old paralegal from New York City, was on the Downtown train when he noticed the shirtless homeless man. After observing him for a while, Resto stood up, removed his shirt, and handed it to the homeless man, leaving himself in a white tank top. His kindness extended further as he noticed the man struggling to put the shirt on, especially with patches of missing hair on his head. Resto assisted him and, sensing the continued cold, also offered his hat. In an interview, he expressed, “It was the least I could do. I didn’t know what his reaction would be. He seemed to have a mental disability and couldn’t physically put it on. I had to put it on him like a child.” Resto invited the homeless man to share a meal and called 311 for assistance. As they waited, the man fell asleep.

A subway passenger captured the incident on video and shared it online, causing it to rapidly go viral. When Resto performed the compassionate act, he had no idea that his actions would inspire others. Resto’s girlfriend, already aware of his kind nature, was not surprised by his gesture towards the homeless man.

Resto received recognition for his actions during Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s State of the State address at the Empire State Plaza convention center. Watch the video here:
